ஸத் (இருப்பு) பரமேச்வரன்;

அம்பாள் என்கிற காருண்யமும் கலந்த மரம் பரம உயர்வான ஸ்தானம் அவர் சுப்ரமண்யர்;

Kanchi Mahaswami's Maha Samadhi

His Holiness, Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi, the 68th Sankaracharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam in South India, passed away in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday, January 8th, 1994, just four months before he was due to complete his centenary. The end of the 68th pontiff of the Kanchi Mutt came suddenly at 2:58pm as he was relaxing in his room within the mutt. All of India rushed to pay respect-Hindus, Muslims, Christians, rich, poor, low caste and high caste alike.

The pontiff, slightly indisposed due to a phlegm formation, had stopped giving darshan to the public since the first of this year. But he recovered fully and was talking to devotees. He listened that final morning to a continuous recitation of the 1,000 names of Vishnu by 100 devotees. The two junior pontiffs, His Holiness Jayendra Saraswathi and his disciple Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi, met the pontiff around 2:30pm before leaving for Tambaram, a suburb of Madras. Informed in transit that the pontiff’s condition was serious, they rushed back to Kanchi mutt at 4:30pm, but he had already attained mahasamadhi. When informed of the end of his guru on his arrival at the mutt, Sri Jayendra was too shaken for some time to leave the van. After he collected himself, he ran in followed by Vijayendra. Three doctors-Bhaskaran, Ranganathan and Sambamoorthy-attended on the sage till he breathed his last.

Shri Maragathambigai sameda Shri Pallikondeeswarar, Suruttappalli

By the odd numbers from 1 to 33, Chandas liked by Devas are attained. By the even numbers from 4 to 48, Chandas liked by humans are attained. In order to get the love of Devas as well as humans, odd numbers and even numbers are both mentioned here.

वाजः- Food, प्रसवः- its production, अपिजः- its frequent production, क्रतुः- the resolve to enjoy it, or, yaga, सुवः- Surya, the cause of food production, मूर्धा- sky, व्यश्नियः- born in sky, अन्त्यः- born at the end, भौवनः- born in the world, भुवनः- world, अधिपतिः- king. (All this should be very favourable to me).

Alternatively, the twelve words from वाजः to अधिपतिः may be taken to mean the names of the twelve months from ‘Chaitra’ to ‘Phalguna’. In that case, the idea is that those twelve months may do me good.

Saint with Golden Hand

...Yet another day when i went to Thenambakkam, Maha Periyava sat like Seshadri Swamigal, with legs folded in the same way and his left hand palm holding the chin and asked ‘Is this not how HE is sitting?’. I could not make out any difference between the two of them and tears welled up in my eyes. It was some time later that Maha Periyava spoke those immortal words

‘Will I ever become like Seshadri Swamigal?, Will I attain that level?’

If Maha Periyava whom all of us know is saakshath Parameswaran said this of Seshadri Swamigal, at what level HE must have been?

- Writer Sri.Bharanidharan

Mahan's birth

The appearance of Divine Light, on Saturday, 22nd January 1870, signalled the birth of Mahan when the Hastham star was in the ascendant. Sri Séshadri Swamigal was born to Vardarajan and Maragathammal. As he was born on a Saturday, He was given the name Séshadri in honor of Lord Srinivasa (Balaji).

When he was four years of age he would sing devotional songs and stotras, taught by his mother, in a melodious voice and everyone regarded the boy as a Divine-child.

How he came to be know as Séshadri with the Golden Hand

Every day, Mahaan's mother used to take the child Séshadri to the temple. On their way one shopkeeper would sell Krishna idols. One day the child got down on seeing the beautiful idols of Lord Krishna, and told his mother that he would perform puja (prayers) to Lord Krishna. The shopkeeper was so happy to see the child's interest that he gave the idol free to the child.

The next day when Magathammal went with the child to the temple, the shop- keeper prostrated at her feet and took the child's hand and saluted it saying "Golden Hand", "Golden Hand". All the bystanders were surprised at the attitude of the shop-keeper. He started explaining that he never had such tremendous sales and attributed it to the touch of the divine child. He went on to say that all the idols were sold out. This news spread throughout the village and everyone started addressing Séshadri as "Thanga Kai Séshadri", which means "Séshadri with the Golden Hand."

Through out His life Sri Séshadri performed many miracles and continues to do so to this day (through his subtle body and also through his disciples.)

Few grains of rice

One day, as Ramana Maharshi was strolling in his Ashram, he noticed a few grains of rice lying on the ground near the kitchen. He immediately started collecting all the grains. Seeing that the Saint was carefully picking up the few grains, His devotees were surprised and gathered around Him. They could not believe that the great Saint, who had left His home and worldly ties for the sake of God, cared so much for a few grains of rice. Finally, one of His devotees had the courage to ask Him, Gurudev, we have many bags of rice in the kitchen. Why do you take the trouble to pick up these few grains?"

The Saint replied, "You see only these few grains of rice, but try to see what has gone into these grains. The hard work of the farmer, who ploughed the field and sowed the seeds, the water of the ocean, the clouds and the rain, the cool air and the warm sunshine, the soft soil and the rice plants. All these have gone into these grains. If you understand this, you will see the hand of God in every grain. So, do not waste them or crush them under your feet. If you do not want to eat them, give them to the birds."

How many times do we waste things like water, food, paper, etc., that we feel are unimportant! Next time before wasting things or not taking care of what we have, we can remember this story and see the presence of God in all creation.

THEDIVANTHA CHITHAMBARAM"

What Life has taught Me

Bhavan's Journal was privileged to publish the Paramacharya's article entitled 'What Life Has Taught Me' some years ago. Rarely do saints like our Paramacharya talk about themselves. But he did so and what he said was marked by 'vinaya', humility of which he is never tired of speaking. Said the Acharya: "God has created some souls to live for others only.

When this article appeared in the 'Bhavan's journal', Rajaji was the first to congratulate us on securing an article of this kind from His Holiness.

The first two experiences remembered as having occurred in the third or fourth year of my life, are dreadful to think, as they were interwoven with temptation, a greed avarice, deceit, groaning, loss lamentation and the like.

A 'mara naai' as they call it in Tamil or teddy cat (an animal which generally climbs on trees and destroys the fruits during nights) somehow got into a room in the house and thrust its head into a small copper pot containing jaggery. The animal was not able to pull out its head and was running here and there in the room all through the right with its head stuck in the pot.

"Obviously he had some mathematical formula!"

Once a team of 5-6 scientists from U.S, probably some New York University, visited the temple, and did a lot of research on the shadow of the Vimana, which does not fall on the ground, at any time of the day, in any season. They arrived at the conclusion that it is not based on any mathematical formula, and is a coincidental accident, which cannot be replicated at all, unless such a coincidence occurs again.

Arudra Dharshan (Wednesday, 18th December 2013).

Margazhi month, known as the Twilight in Heaven time, is the most suitable occasion to take a cue from the Sun while it is in Sagittarius, the period known as the time the Gods rest and rejuvenate.

During this auspicious time, Lord Shiva’s birthday comes, which is celebrated on the Arudra star day and is known as Arudra Darshan. It is believed to be the day when Lord Shiva’s energy is very close to the earth; hence it has been given the importance of being His birthday.

Lord Shiva is worshiped in the cosmic dance form, making His power and heightened consciousness accessible to those who seek it. It is considered that Arudra Darshan, Lord Nataraja’s day, is the longest night of the year. After this, the days get longer and the nights get shorter.

चमकम् CHAMAKAM सप्तमोऽनुवाकः ANUVAKAM 7

अंशुः, अदाभ्यं etc. mentioned in this Anuvakam are specific vessels, generally called ‘Graha’, used in Somayaga. ‘Rasmi’ is not ‘Graha’; but as it is used for picking up the graha ‘Adaabhya’, it is mentioned separately. The word अधिपतिः indicates दधिग्रह. As that graha is greater than other grahas as mentioned in Sruti, ज्येष्ठो वा एष ग्रहाणां, the word अधिपतिः refers to दधिग्रह.

The graha ध्रुवं is indicated by the term वैश्वानर on occasion. Here there are two वैश्वदेव words. The first is in ‘Praatassavanam’; the second pertains to ‘Tritiyasavanam’. The grahas सारस्वतः and पौष्णः are used in ‘Vikritiyaga’.

The prayer is that all the above grahas should be favourable to me.
